How Money Are You: Trip to the Grocery Store, Safeway

Did you ever get frustrated at the contestants on The Price is Right for their inaccurate estimates? Then you'll love getting competitive with yourself in my new feature, "Trip to The Grocery Store." I'll test your knowledge about what items cost at the grocery store according to a receipt from my most recent trip. It will be interesting to see how prices change over time and how cost-aware we really are. In this case, the store was Safeway in San Francisco and the trip was just yesterday. How money are you?

Well, I think the prices for dairy items are different here in the Midwest, since alot of our things, such as eggs, come from local (like regionally local) farmers.

Plus, I didn't know they sold laundry detergent for $3.99...I usually see it between $5 and $9 (but then again, we use the low suds formula for front loaders).

But talk about grocery, nothing is like Chicago and their extra tax for bottled water. Talk about another $2 on a 12 pack of Aquafina...

Wow San Francisco. I paid $18.00 for an 8 pack of Venus razors last night here in Austin, TX. That really translates the cost of living comparison.

This is really interesting. I'm not used to buying less than a gallon of milk and I just buy regular old bread, nothing fancy.

    And razors are ridiculously priced!

Wow eggs cost $3.69?! Where I'm at right now (small town USA) visiting my mom, eggs are $1.49. The brand name bread is $3.39 but the milk prices are killer! I buy 3 gallons of milk per week for my 18 month old at $4.69 a pop. Luckily mostly everything around here is locally produced.

I got them all wrong, but, here's why I think

I live in Nashville, TN, which has a lower cost of living than SF. I get my eggs from my CSA, at $3 a carton, and have been doing so for a full year straight now. I don't buy or drink San Pellegrino, or bottled water for that matter (ever heard of Brita?). I have NEVER HEARD of Lucerne milk. I prefer to get WF's 365 gallon of milk, or Silk or Almond Breeze.

But I do use Venus razors and have resisted buying them for the longest time because they are SO DANG expensive. But it's about that time again to buy em. I once got a super large pack at Sam's Club. They ended up being only about $1 each I think, but they only had the basic ones. That was a couple years ago though.

i don't buy any of that crap so i didn't know the price. but things are priced differently based on geography so this isn't the best idea.

I am out of touch with reality, I shop at a commissary. Not much selection but the milk is only 2.61 for a full gallon.

Lucerne milk is the generic safeway milk, so WF 365 would be better milk.

Wow those prices are even more expensive then the prices here on the Cape. Our prices are crazy here though because it has to come over the "bridge"!

What kind of eggs are you buying?!? Even the organic eggs don't cost me that much...

This one was tough because the cost of living is much lower in Texas, and I tend to buy my bread from the bakery for $2-3 and buy organic milk from a regional dairy.

Amazing how prices differ by region. In Minnysoooder, I can get a dozen eggs for $1.89, and if I keep my eyes peeled for specials, sometimes even for $.99. For a half gallon of milk, I usually spend around &1.79.

This is EXACTLY why I moved from SF to Austin. My grocery bill for a family of 4 went from $300-350 A WEEK to $100-150 a week. SF just is not worth it anymore. You have to be a multi-millionaire to live like a middle class person in the rest of the country. I can't tell you how many times I had to bite my tongue from shouting out "It's so cheap!" when I first moved here. Native Texans aren't too keen on CA folk showing up here and raising prices on everything. Because it's all SO CHEAP in comparison.

    Regarding Gillette Venus:

(In my best CSI Miami Horatio voice)

    "That, my friennnnds..."

    (pausing to put on sunglasses)

"Is why I got.... laser hair removal..."

(pushing jacket back w/both hands now placing hands on hips w/feet shoulder-width apart & staring off into the sun)

I got most right... probably because I live in San Fran... grocery prices are crazy right now ESPecially the eggs ! I usually shop at the little market down the street to save on produce... but they don't carry some other stuff I need. (Bread, other dairy)

Sad for most things, but I was also surprised about the detergent being that cheap, and I live in the SF Bay Area, too.

Safeway is pretty bad, so we try to drive to Target whenever we can to save a buck on everything and hope we didn't pay more in gas money to get there!

About the razor blades: Why do they sometimes charge twice as much for new blades than for a whole new razor with a few refills? That's always confused me when I see it.
