Supply and demand is the name of the game, and these days there's hardly any demand for new cars. Hyundai is responding to this economic reality by getting creative in a way that could appeal to potential car buyers who are concerned about losing their jobs.
The company is offering a walkaway program that allows buyers to return their cars if they endure a life-changing event within one year of purchase.

We're starting to switch gears to 2009, but last year was a big one and 2008 is hardly a distant memory at this point. A Gallup poll asked Americans who they admired most in 2008 and the results are varied and interesting.
For the seventh year in a row, Hillary Clinton was ranked as the most admired woman, and Sarah Palin ousted second place incumbent Oprah Winfrey in the 2008 list.

Almost every big bank made headlines last year, and it looks like we can expect one bank to stand out as the bank to watch in 2009. You all voted Bank of America as the best commercial bank of 2008 and the experts seem to agree that it's number one. While the process of purchasing Merrill Lynch began in September, the transaction was made final on Thursday, making Bank of America the biggest bank in the US and ending 94 years of independence for Merrill.

Holding onto money is everyone's goal these days, yet one honest California family was eager to give back the envelope filled with $100 bills found in a box of crackers. Whole Foods is notorious for costly groceries that eat up our paychecks, but the Rogoff family unknowingly left the store $10,000 richer.
Instead of depositing the found money into a bank account, the Rogoffs called the police to report the booty found in a box of Annie's Sour Cream and Onion Cheddar Bunny crackers.

Employers are starting to resort to measures other than layoffs to make it through these trying economic times. They can't get rid of all staff if they want to stay in business, but they also can't afford to fulfill their payroll obligations. Working without pay isn't an option so some companies are asking employees to stay home without pay as a cost-saving measure.

We can certainly live without credit cards, but for a very long time we were fooled into thinking that wasn't the case. Credit card companies were able to get away with a lot during that time and weren't always regulated in ways that would protect consumers. Yesterday, the Fed ruled on a set of new regulations that are obviously consumer-oriented, but credit card companies won't have to act accordingly until 2010.

Starbucks has never been in so much trouble, financially speaking. The company's same-store sales continue to worsen as consumers visit the chain less frequently, and CEO Howard Schulz admitted, "We're beating ourselves up every day because we've just never seen numbers like this." He predicts that 2009 will be an even bigger challenge than the second half of this year but thinks the company will get by until the economy begins to improve.

After hearing the news that a Wal-Mart employee was brutally trampled to death by discount-hungry shoppers on Black Friday, you might think eager shoppers everywhere turned out for after-Thanksgiving sales. While other retailers avoided such tragedy on the biggest shopping day of the year, they didn't draw in the same crowds and are now apprehensively facing the bad news that 2008 could end in the red.
The prospect of getting something for less might have caused some aggressive crowds, but the number of shoppers out this Black Friday didn't compare to those in recent years.

The idea that some people are right-brained or left-brained makes it possible to rationalize why someone isn't particularly smart in a certain subject, and new research shows this type of reasoning isn't limited to math problems and literature. A Cambridge University study found that entrepreneurs' brains have more activity in the region of the brain responsible for making "risky or hot" decisions.
The study is the first to assess entrepreneurs through neuroscience.

2008 is not yet over, yet the final votes have been cast for the word of the year. When I think of the past year, I think foreclosure, but the New Oxford American Dictionary only crowns a word that is unique and was populated in the past year. For example, these four words were runners-up to the word of the year winner.
